All levels workshop
Learn about the expressive possibilities of slip decoration in this demonstration-led masterclass with slipware potter Mike Parry. Drawing on his background in production throwing and years of developing his own distinctive studio practice, Mike will share his approach to working with slips through a series of practical demonstrations, techniques, and material discussions.
The session will cover the fundamentals of slipware, including materials, recipes, and tools, alongside decorative techniques such as dipping, pouring, combing, trailing, brushing, feathering, and marbling. Participants will also have the opportunity to try selected techniques themselves by decorating a beaker and a slab or tile.
Suitable for all levels, this masterclass offers an inspiring insight into the immediacy, fluidity, and creative potential of slip decoration.
Please note that this masterclass focuses on slip decoration techniques rather than making pottery forms from scratch. Pots and slabs will be prepared in advance for participants to work on during the session, allowing more time to explore and experiment with the decorative processes demonstrated by Mike.
The course fee includes the glazing and firing of two finished pieces decorated during the workshop.
Mike Parry bio:
Based in his home studio in South East Wales, Mike Parry creates functional slipware pottery that balances everyday utility with sculptural artistry. His pieces are designed for life: intended to be used on a daily basis, brought out for special occasions, or simply admired upon a shelf.
Working with rich red earthenware clay, every pot is hand thrown on the wheel, decorated using liquid clay slips, and fired in an electric kiln to 1100°C. Through the throwing and fluid slipping process, Mike captures a distinct sense of movement and spontaneity, intentionally emphasising the raw, honest qualities of the clay.
Mike’s practice is deeply informed by ceramic history. His work draws inspiration from the robust forms of medieval pottery, the rich traditions of 18th-century English slipware, post-war British studio pottery, and contemporary ceramics. The result is a timeless, material-focused collection built for the modern home.
