Course Overview
Stop guessing and start formulating. This 2-day workshop (spread over two consecutive Saturdays) demystifies the science of ceramics.
We move beyond "off-the-shelf" products to give you a professional understanding of Glaze Theory, UMF (Unity Molecular Formula), and controlling glazes using the Stull Chart and glaze calculation software.
Led by practising ceramic artist Pascal Nichols, this is a deep dive into the materials that bring your work to life.
What You’ll Master:
The Science: A practical introduction to glaze chemistry, including raw materials and their roles.
The Formulation: Hands-on guidance in reading recipes and mixing a base glaze from scratch. Understanding of how to tweak and tune glaze recipes to control the flow and texture of glaze surfaces, and make durable,’food-safe’ glazes.
The Color: Creating "color runs" and biaxial blends using oxides, opacifiers, and stains.
The Analysis: Learn to read your test tiles to troubleshoot and refine your results.
What’s Included:
All chemistry materials and test tiles.
Expert tuition in a professional, safe studio environment.
Take home your set of colour blend test tiles and all the glaze recipes covered on the course.
What to Bring: Please bring a notepad as this is a knowledge-packed course designed to build your confidence at the glazing bench, and an FFP3 dust mask.
