Course Overview
Join us at 7 Spot Pottery for an immersive two-day introduction to the diverse world of ceramics. Designed as the perfect starting point for our longer community courses, this workshop gives you a comprehensive taste of both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques.
Whether you are curious about where to begin your pottery journey or simply want to expand your creative skills, this course offers a supportive environment to learn from our experienced instructors. By exploring a variety of making methods in one weekend, you’ll gain the confidence and insight to decide which path to pursue next in our term-time classes.
Day 1: Form and Decoration
• Morning (Slab Building & Inlay): Dive into hand-building by constructing functional pottery using slab techniques. You will learn the decorative art of clay inlay, using contrasting clay colors to embed intricate patterns and motifs directly into the surface of your work.
• Afternoon (Wheel Throwing Introduction): Get hands-on at the potter’s wheel. This session covers the fundamentals of centering and throwing, giving you a true experience of working on the wheel before committing to a longer course.
Day 2: Glazing and Coil Building
• Morning (Glazing & Surface Design): Return to your bisque-fired pieces from Day 1. Learn how to apply our studio glazes and experiment with decorative brushwork effects, understanding how surface treatment transforms raw clay into finished ceramics.
• Afternoon (Coil Building): Master the coil method to construct large-scale terracotta garden pots. This technique offers a different approach to form and structure, distinct from slab building or throwing.
